Module 1. Imaging 1

Qualification goals: The students master the basics of quantitative medical imaging. They learn the underlying physical principles, detection methods, and analysis tools. The students understand the advantages and disadvantages of different brain imaging approaches.
Assessment Measures: oral examination (30 minutes, 4 ECTS), unrestrictedly repeatable. The ungraded solutions (81044) are required for the registration for the final module exam.

Contents: Introduction to the most relevant clinical medical imaging devices: PET, CT and MRI. Introduction to microscopic techniques used for microstructural medical imaging. Physical effects used to generate contrasts (e.g., decay, absorption, spin dynamics). Image reconstruction and interpretation for diagnostics. Combined usage of experiment and simulation. Modelling of phantoms and simulation of imaging devices and measurements. Revealing the human connectome.

Contents: Linear and circular accelerators. Betatron and synchrotron oscillations. Linear beam dynamics. Interaction of particles with matter, shower, momentum- and track- measurement, track detectors (gas chambers), semi-conductor detectors, time measurement, energy measurement (calorimeter), particle identification, experiments of particle and astro-particle physics, instrumentation, data acquisition.

Semester: Winter (3rd)
Qualification goals: The students master the basics of imaging the brain at different scales (from MRI to microscopy, from macro to micro).
Assessment Measures: The registration to the final module exam is possible only when the ungraded achievement (46990) is fulfilled in component IMG2-b. The type of the ungraded achievement (exercises, term paper, etc.) will be announced at the beginning of the lecture. The type of the final module exam will be announced at the beginning of the lecture. One of two options is possible:
• written module examination (60 minutes), unrestrictedly repeatable;
• oral module examination (30 minutes), unrestrictedly repeatable.

Contents: Introduction to the importance of modern image processing and data visualization techniques to brain imaging. Data types and structures (scalar, vector, volume data). Transformation and filtering techniques to carve out specific image features. Image processing pipelines in a supercomputing environment. Impact of AI on image processing. Methods for brain data visualization.
IMG2-b. "Seminar on Imaging II (Jülich)"

Overall Workload: 120 hours
Contents: Introduction to a selected modeling and simulation framework (lectures, online descriptions). Getting familiar with the code and its application (task-driven). Preparation of oral presentation about experience, method and results.
