Computer Simulation in Science

Specialization Modules

The modules within the CSiS Master´s Programme are divided into compulsory modules and specialization modules. Specialization modules are those, related to specializations which student has chosen. These modules are taught during the second and third semester of studies. Below you can find some descriptions of those modules and links to the corresponding web-pages:

These specialization modules are aimed on the acquisition of expertise and skills on specific topics of atmospheric physics, atmospheric chemistry, measurement techniques as well as numerical modelling. They also include the one-week studies in the Summer School on Chemistry and Dynamics of the Atmosphere at the Research Centre Jülich.

During the studies of CEM specialization modules students acquire an insight into various techniques to numerically simulate electromagnetic and coupled multiphysics field problems in highly complex technical systems or biological organisms. Students gain ability to effectively use modern commercial CEM simulation tools or to alternatively develop and use own implementations of electromagnetic field simulators.

In these modules students find out the basic concepts in Computational Finance, as modelling of financial markets, Black-Scholes model, stochastic differential equations, finite difference methods, finite element methods, partial differential equations arising in finance, numerical solution of initial boundary value problems etc. They learn how to model in finance, develop and use simulation tools and judge their efficiency and practicability in front offices.

CFM specialization consists of mandatory, as well as of optional modules to choose: Computational Fluid Dynamics, Radiative Heat Transfer, Pedestrian Dynamics, Fire Simulation etc. During the studies students master the basics of fluid dynamics. They shall be enabled to apply different models to simulate flows for the purposes of research and development, as well as to critically evaluate CFD results.

In Detector Physics students learn how to apply techniques of particle detection and reconstruction to particular detector setups. They gain knowledge how to simulate the response of particle detectors to incident particles. They learn how to operate and control detectors, record data in laboratory setups and analyse these data, obtain hands-on experience in state-of-the-art experimental equipment (tunneling microscopy).

The modules in this specializations are dedicated to mastering the basics of quantitative medical imaging. Students learn the underlying physical principles, detection methods, and analysis tools. They get to understand the advantages and disadvantages of different brain imaging approaches, and then master the basics of imaging the brain at different scales (from MRI to microscopy, from macro to micro).

During their studies on these modules students learn how to describe material properties from the microscopic to the macroscopic scale. They get acquainted with the fundamental concepts of quantum mechanics, thermodynamics and essential knowledge in quantum chemistry and statistical thermodynamics, learn and apply numerical methods for the simulations of materials at the molecular level.
